Annual EAN Meeting 2024: Elevating Apprentices’ Quality of Life

Group picture – EAN Meeting 2024

On June 16th and 17th, over 30 apprentices convened in Brussels for the annual European Apprentices Network (EAN) meeting. This year’s theme, “Quality of Life with a Focus on Decent Work,” resonated deeply as the European Year of Skills draws to a close. The EAN remains steadfast in advocating for enhanced representation of apprentices at local, national, and European levels, emphasizing that apprentices’ voices are vital every year.

Day 1: Reflecting on Challenges and Systems

The first day was dedicated to addressing both past and current challenges faced by apprentices. Attendees engaged in discussions to understand each other’s contexts and apprenticeship systems. New members were given insights into the workings of the EAN with European institutions. A significant highlight was the consultation on a Proposed Directive by the European Commission Plenary, facilitated by Skyla Thomas, which provided a platform for apprentices to voice their perspectives and concerns.

Day 2: Shaping the Future of Apprenticeships

Day two began with a review of the EAN’s seven priorities, inviting suggestions on membership and organizational structure. This was followed by an insightful panel discussion titled “The Future of Apprenticeships – VET after the Osnabrück Declaration”, featuring esteemed speakers such as Alessandra Frassetto (European Vocational Training Association), Beatrice Biolcati Rinaldi (European Commission), and Nadia Deis (United Federation of Workers in Denmark 3F). Their discussions provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of vocational education and training (VET) post-Osnabrück Declaration.

Looking Ahead

The two-day event was marked by rich discussions and meaningful exchanges, fostering a collaborative spirit among participants. The EAN looks forward to welcoming even more apprentices in Brussels next year.

In the upcoming months, the EAN has several initiatives planned:

  • New Call for Members: an invitation for new apprentices to join the network.
  • Research on Mental Health and Wellbeing of Apprentices: we will soon publish the results of our research on the mental health and wellbeing of apprentices.
  • Updated EAN priorities: the 2024 version of what apprentices need, want and advocate for,
  • Call for Contributions: inviting contributions for consultations, campaigns, and participation in various events.
